Albert Einstein Memorial
I traveled to Washington DC this weekend for a wedding. On Saturday morning, we had some time to kill so we took a trip to the National Mall. I have to been to the district several times, but Emma and her family (my travel companions) had only been once or twice.
We saw the usual sights: Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial Wall and The White House. However, Paul (Emma’s dad) pointed out his favorite site just off the mall—something that I had never seen before. On the grounds of the National Academy of Sciences on Constitution Avenue lies the Albert Einstein Memorial.
The memorial features a bronze statue of a jovial Einstein holding manuscript papers etched with the equations summarizing his most important scientific contributions including the theory of general relativity (E=mc2). The sculptor, Robert Berks, is the artist behind the bust of JFK at the Kennedy Center. If you ever find yourself at the mall, check out this unique sculpture on Constitution Avenue, behind the Vietnam Memorial Wall.
